Only a few years after it was incorporated, the town of Saint Michaels, Maryland was forced to endure the War of 1812. This charming seaside town was known for its boat-building, but had to redirect their ingenuity when faced with a British armada off their coast in August of 1813.
As night fell, locals hung lanterns from trees in a nearby forest. The British navy, mistaking these lanterns to be the center of Saint Michaels, shelled the forest while leaving the town basically unscathed.
The black, gold and green accents incorporated into our Saint Michaels timepiece pays homage to this ingenuity (black night, gold lanterns, and green forest accordingly). Today, much of Saint Michaels retains its original architecture and charm, not to mention some of the freshest seafood in the entire Bay. It just goes to show how a little creativity can go a very long way…
